London Design Festival

Еvery September the London Design Festival celebrates design. This year, Design Week are hosting several events during the festival, including a panel talk on building brand awareness featuring NB Studio creative director, Nick Finney, a discussion at Design Junction called Dyslexic Design, based on an exhibition of the same name, a panel talk about the future of packaging, and a session with Supergraphics founders, Eva Kellenberger and Sebastian White. This year  100% Design has increased its exhibition space by 20 per cent. Have a look at some interesting new designs that can be seen:

The world’s lightest wood table

Ripple is an experimental prototype for an ultra-lightweight timber table. This elegant minimalist design created by London-based designer Benjamin Hubert with  Canadian manufacturer Corelam is made using 70-80% less material than a standard timber table and can be assembled and manoeuvred by a single person.. Ripple is 2.5 metres long, one metre wide and weighs only 9 kilograms.  It is produced from three ply 0.8mm birch aircraft plywood, using an innovative production process of corrugating plywood which makes it stronger. Even legs are made from it.  It was part of Hubert’s Antecedents show at The Aram Gallery during London Design festival 2013.ripple table

The London Design Festival 2013

Two trends that I notice and that I like very much: graphic design and
African-inspired design:

African design,  All of these beautiful designs are part of Graphic Africa, an exhibition of African design at London’s Platform Gallery.

Another trend in interior design that is also noticed during London Design festival 2013 is the renewal of eclectic.

London Design Festival 2013 starts today

One of the most important design events for the season - London Design Festival is now officially open. And its symbol this year obviously will be the Endless Stair, designed by Architecture firm dRMM:

London Design Festival 2013 - Themes and Trends

Just a few days before the opening of this most important design event in UK we already have some impressions about the themes and trends that are expected to be seen at London Design Festival 2013:
  • growing interesrt in modern crafts, but at the same time 'avoiding the pitfall of slipping into rustic pastime pastiche'

  • all things geometric + optical illusion:

  • metallics - the real ones and also all things bright and shiny

Lars Beller Fjetland’s New Cloche Lamp

This not a new trend - I have published about it several times, especially about the obsession with copper, which is one of my favourite metals.

Fashion meets product design at London Design Festival 2012

It is clear that fashion is often a source of inspiration for interior design, but now we can see how a furniture designer (again - because we saw Patricia Urquiola's designs earlier) designs shoes:

They have teamed up for creating a "collection of limited edition footwear which is inspired  and pays homage to the of wondrously curious squirrel." (source) Fantastical footwear collaboration with Tracey Neuls pops up exclusively at Selfridges London

But  Tord Boontje's new work in the field of fashion contains also a collection named  Cherry Pip jewellery, made from Swarovski crystals and cherry pips from Boontje's aunt's garden:
