Archiproducts Design Awards 2016 Winners

For its first ever edition Archiproducts Design Awards 2016 had 490 products nominated by 250 brands with headquarters in 15 different countries. An international jury, composed of members of the 25 most influential architectural studios from all over the world, has chosen the winners of the ADA 2016 awards. Here below are some of my favourites from different categories, but, it appears bathroom products are most interesting:

Design of the Year 2015 - Human Organs-on-Chips

It appears that the time to use animals to test a product is over with the new Human Organs-on-Chips project which was announced as the overall winner of the annual Designs of the Year awards

It is developed by Donald Ingber and Dan Dongeun Huh from Harvard University's Wyss Institute and uses human cells to line its tiny microchip-like devices to mimic the complex tissue structures of human organs. The product is intended to be used for drugs and cosmetics testing, as well as for the treatment of infections and inherited diseases.

"The chips are clear polymers that contain hollow micro-channels lined with living organ cells and blood capillary cells that can be manipulated to replicate organ functions. The chips are a form of cell-culture, but a marked advancement on existing models in terms of their accuracy in predicting the effects of untested drugs on human organs. The longterm aim of the chips, once the technology is perfected, is to replace human and animal testing in medicine, speed up the discovery of new drugs, and decrease the cost and risk of such drugs' development." Disegno

Clever and simple

I am always impressed when I see a simple, but very useful design idea that solves successfuly problems - in the end, that is one of the main tasks of design. This one is about a door that is also a dryer and  a hanger:


HANG OUT is one of three winners of the International Design Award 2015, design by ANITA KOKOSZCZYK, student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow, Poland.

B&B Italia - WINNER of INTERIOR INNOVATION AWARD 2015

Almora - design by Doshi Levien

Following the initial selection process, the Jury of the 2015 Interior Innovation Award - organised by the German Design Council for Imm Cologne - granted the Almora and Tabano armchairs, designed by Doshi Levien and Patricia Urquiola respectively, both for B&B Italia, the title of “Interior Innovation Award - Winner 2015”. The armchairs will be presented at a special exhibition dedicated to the Award, and will remain in the running for the title of “Interior Innovation Award - Best of Best 2015”, to be granted by the Jury as part of the second selection process, to be held during IMM Cologne.

Royal Ontario Museum Washroom, design by Canadian architecture firm superkül 

This design was awarded the top prize in the Shape the Future competition. 

The elegant undulating Corian countertop integrates several bathroom fixtures and functions into its sculptural shape.

I congratulate the jury for their choice! I like the products and the trend they express! The winners in the ninth Wallpaper* Design Awards 2013 for Best trend are:

The Azulej collection created by Patricia Urquiola for Ceramiche Mutina has earned the Wallpaper Design Award 2013. For Azulej the nomination was in the Best Trend section, and it was the confirmation of the
uniqueness of this project, which proposes as a wall covering an aesthetic mix composed by geometric shapes and floral patterns, providing an absolute creative freedom. The concept behind this ceramic collection has materialized in a unique and surprising result, mixing materials technology and “hand-made” work, a past of ancient majolica and a future of interior design.“It is the second time that our products receive the Wallpaper Design Award”, Massimo Orsini, Mutina’s President, says. “The first time, it was
in 2011 with the collection Phenomenon by Tokujin Yoshioka and this new goal  shows that the design of author is the right way to go, the winning one”.
