The largest interactive chandelier in the world at London Design Festival

Following its successful debut appearance at this year’s Salone del Mobile, Milan, designjunction london will showcase the very best in global design during the London Design Festival.
One of the most interesting new products will be a spectacular interactive LED chandelier presented by Beau McClellan Design alongside their debut lighting collection. Nomad is an impressive 5m long lighting installation made up of 200 individual components, using the studio’s signature glass mirror-coating finish, reflecting the interior by day and becoming semi-transparent at night, when illuminated by LEDs. Each of the LEDs used in this stunning piece can be individually controlled to create numerous colour effects and variations using a touch screen, ipad or iphone. The light from the LED is cleverly diffused through frosted hand-ground crystal which magnifies the light, creating warm pastel shades of colour.

Growth of clothing - see how it happens!

Growth of clothing through the use of bacterial cellulose - this is what Suzanne Lee,  a senior research fellow in the school of fashion / textiles, Central Saint Martins, London and creative director of Biocouture explains here:

Lee will host a workshop tomorrow, september 23rd, at the 100% Materials stand at 100% Design during London Design Week and will demonstrate growth of a biomaterial using nothing other tan sugary tea and bacteria. The 'eco-textile' is grown in flat sheets which are then cut to shape, sewn together or
moulded over 3D forms. And this is how the result looks:

Solutions for the compact homes of 2050

This is one of my dreams (almost) fulfilled: a closet that cleans clothing!Almost, because it is just a concept of one of the Finalists of the Electrolux Design Lab 2010 -
the Clean Closet by Michael Edenius, Sweden is essentially just that - a closet that cleans clothing. Textiles are scanned for impurities and cleaned accordingly with molecular technology that removes dirt and odours. It combines in one the laundry basket, the washing machine, and drying cabinet to save space and, as no water is used in the process, is kinder to the environment.
You can see the rest of the finalists at100% Design on September 23 where Electrolux paints a super-urbanised future London. Another my favorate is a fridge hung outside your window to save space and energy.

London Design Festival 2009: part one from Wallpaper

I already posted several small previews of 100% Design that , including the first Bulgarian participation there, but now you can have a more detailed look at what is going to be seen in London this coming week in the on-line Wallpaper* Magazine Gallery . Some of the projects that impressed me most:

"Genotype lighting project in Corian by Tomek Rygalek"

Max Lamb's China Granite Project is is the result of a month the designer spent in Chengnanzhuang, Hebei Province, China, stonecutting and polishing in a quarry.
I am impressed with these beautiful polished surfaces of the China Granite series - they really look like pools of water.

Jaime Hayon catches public attention with a giant ceramic chess set 'The Tournament '(top and right) ,
resident in Trafalgar Square,  where the pieces are on rollers and the game is played, with two opponents seated above the giant board, calling out to men on the ground, who move the pieces for them.
