The beauty of mosaics

The concrete floor takes on a silky appearance in the kitchen and dining areas. The Gideå table is from IKEA, the Karim Rashid Oh chairs are from Umbra, and the Erik Magnussen kerosene Ship’s lamp is by Stelton. Photo by: Linny Morris

I used mosaic as a means of uniting all the colours in an open kitchen-dining-living room space in one of my earlier projects:

How to make a long room look more balanced

 This is one of my projects, where in a small apartment with unsightly dark living room I had to solve several problems:
- make it look more proportional, because it was long and narrow; with just one window at the far end;
- combine in this small space the functions of a kitchen, dining room and living room;
- preserve the available flooring.
Through the use of colour techniques and suitable materials I think we succeeded to make the room much wider, lighter and inviting.
Here below is the result:

A great example of using wood scraps!

Slide 1
source

You like it? This mosaic is made exactly of wood scraps remaining from the work of designers and woodworkers Jason and Lars Dressler. The huge pixelated image out of scraps adorns the facade of the Yorkdale Mall in Toronto. The tsak was to create something that would evoke Ontario’s north. Inspired by their photograph of a fallen leaf, the Brothers Dressler crafted the mosaic from 35,788 wooden blocks made from a variety of woods salvaged from the collected history of their workshop.  As they explain, 'They include off-cuts from pieces, leftovers from jobs and extra pieces collected over the years and are shown all in their natural colours.'

Glamourous small bathrooms

Small bathrooms present much more challenges to the interior designer, but that does not mean they cannot be glamourous and functional, even look spacious.
source
How to achieve this? One way is by leaving only the essentials - no shower curtain, no any othe space separating elements, just a sink, a shower and two nooks by the sink and by the shower. And cover all the surfaces with one material - like this beautiful mosaic above.

In the bathroom above a white wall that continues on the sloping ceiling makes this small space look much larger. In both bathrooms a lot of natural light adds to this feeling of much larger space. Of course, the large mirror above the white sink helps for this, too.

The Bathroom - Pure Glamour

I don't like ostentatious vanity, but this design below is just perfect - it has the right amount of glamour in a beautifully designed bathroom where every expensive material and product is used jut because of its qualities and the perfect match with therest of the interior.

The white marble blends well with the white and gold Bisazza mosaic and the yellow glass lighting above elegantly adds modern elelement as if saying that gold is not the only and most important component of glamour :) Great design! I wish this was my project!

Art In Your Home or Office

Interior design is not only about space planning or arranging and coordination of furniture and furnishings. It is also about creating an atmosphere, coziness, mood. How do we achieve that?

Through professional implementation of of all the rules of interior design for balance and coordination, but also through inspired conceptual design and use of emotionally connected to us pieces of art or anything that makes us feel good. I have showed you an excellent example of Art Furniture in Office Design that is something not many of us can allow, but the small table or any other inspiring piece of design-art is worth the investment.

There are many forms of art that we can incorporate directly into our interior design - like tiles! That can be in the form of murals or mosaics.

New at Milan Salone: Mosaic Shoe Bathtub

This is not only the most unusual idea of a bath tub, but it also seems to be very comfortable! And probably the first one intended for women - or not?
This new bathtub model will be unveiled at the Milan showroom of SICIS, April 22 to 27, 2009.
The mosaic detail on this shoe is made from very tiny glass tiles, less than a tenth of an inch each.
