MAISON&OBJECT September 2009 - New Products, Part 1

B&B Italia has once again chosen the Parisian autumn tradeshow  Maison&Objet for the presentation of its latest Outdoor collection.
The new Titikaka bench, design by Naoto Fukasawa in teak lathes with an aluminium frame, contradicts the rigid shape of traditional outdoor benches. Perhaps the waves of the Bolivian Lake inspired this ingenious piece where the surface of the seat seems to almost ripple with wonderful effect of wind over water. In fact, around the aluminium frame the lathes, which continue to the floor on both sides of the bench, have a wavy progression, creating curves that are sculptural yet truly practical for the ergonomics of the seat.

 The luxury feminine Crinoline collection
by Patricia Urquiola now has a new round table. A perfect complement to the rest of this series, the table takes on the same curved lines of the seats as well as the interlacing polyethylene fibres. The base is made up of two connected elements that create a chalice that supports the top and is available in two versions with black-white or bronze-black finishing. The tabletop is available in either white-coloured glass in pate de verre or in white stratified HPL with a pattern milled lines radiating outwards from the centre. The latter version being designed to hold an umbrella in the centre.

Maison & Objet 2009 Offers Antodotes to Crisis

In Paris this week Maison et Objet, a major trade fair, is spotlighting new trends in home style and proposing Antidotes to the gloomy time of financial crisis - the assertive reaction to color as a remedy to the gloom, through the staging of the shelter and creativity:

"Faced with a disoriented world wavering from crisis to crisis, the home has
become, now more than ever, a safety value that leaves us dreaming of better
living. In its modest, intimate way, that place for experimenting with change
consoles us with antigloom remedies. There is no miracle solution. But all kinds
of creation, know-how and technologies, colors and whimsy, elegance and quality
of life are distilling a new positive energy."

To comfort us in a world of uncertainty, the home is revisiting its classics and fixing up the run-down charm of the known.

Maison&Objet Autumn 2008: the Trend is SIMPLICITY

LOOKING AHEAD TO 2009… WITH SIMPLICITY - a brief about the trends that are expected to influence our lives - home furnishings, decoration, design in general and way of thinking - in the coming seasons, according to MAISON&OBJET Observatoire :

Faced with a complex and uncertain world, untidy and cluttered, future
scenarios focus on the essential. Land and local produce are becoming valued again. Urbanites, missing having roots, appreciate a new balance between the city and the countryside. Nature and technology are finally replacing people at the heart of the ecosystem. Making room for the elegance of humble and modest objects. Touch wood. That is a nice way to live in your home.

Elizabeth Leriche considers that "The simple pleasures of rural life are reviving a belief in local produce and setting down roots. In a period of galloping urbanization, a rustic style is becoming deeply rooted. People are discovering the animal and organic beauty of the agricultural world. Objects with roots cultivate the appealing authenticity of raw materials and craftsmanship."

"The NellyRodi style agency reveals the Metropuritans’ new acts of
resistance. Camouflaged in an apparently elegant starkness, these ecological
urbanites proclaim a desire for asceticism and an almost military rigor."
- that is a little far-fetched in my opinion, but who knows? We shall see:)

Less speed for better living. François Bernard suggests taking a break in a dematerialized world. Soft, fluid technologies revisit naturalness and a simplified life philosophy.

- a natural phenomenon, I think, but I doubt that "Style is also inspired by the industrial aesthetics of last century’s designer-engineers." This style has had its influence, has played its role and now the world is ready to go on.I think also that the 'Handmade' trend is most probably going to be a steady one. After the machine-produced and highly technological era now we are reassessing the value of 'natural' and 'unique'. That is also connected with expressing a personal point of view

More trends:

"the main statement of this season's Maison & Objet is abundantly clear: An ocean of gray awaits. Enough to drown in it. Too much of it", writes Hermine Mariaux in Home Textiles Today,

but also

Purples galore. A steady 3-seasons' trickle turning into a flood. All nuances
included from palest lavender through hyacinth and violet to deepest saturation.
True blues pairing with or replacing geen-cast aqua and teal. Bright sky through
cobalt into deep indigo and ultramarine. Navy yielding to brighter hues. Classic
blue-and-white revival. Blue-greens emerging -- not replacing yellow-greens but
pairing with them or even blues in an overall trend toward analogous
combinations.

"Designers Bring Value"

Do you want to learn more about the way some of the most interesting and inspiring objects were created? Yves Behar speaks at about 'Creating objects that tell stories' - a valuable contribution to the "How we design" theme at TED 2008 .
"Designing from the inside out" is the path to create value, says Yve Behar.
One of his latest designs is an unconventional Y-shaped bottle for Y Water™, a new organic, low-calorie drink for children .
“We're using design to create a message that is the core of the brand." says the designer. The playfulness of Y Water is further conveyed with its capability to be reused as a toy or building blocks. Natural rubber connectors called “Y Knots” allow children to connect different packages into molecule-like formations. The reusability of the Y Water package as a creative medium for children prolongs the useful life of the package, making it a more sustainable concept.

Salon Maison & Objet : inspiration and trends

Design trends at Maison & Objet, according to PointClickHome.com :
Subtly Moroccan:Perforated metal work, hand-crafted leather, blown glass, and woven textiles remain characteristic materials, but styles are more streamlined and the forms softened.
Natural Glitz: Nature gets dressy. Floral pattern, on all materials, were decked out in bronze, platinum and gold.
Purple and Grey: The hot palette here —and most everywhere. It’s a moody, but incredibly sophisticated combination.
Chalet Chic: Thick furs, heavy wools, raw wood and hunting themes make up the "Aspen" look.
Japanese Reign: Asian inspiration has always been a dominant force in contemporary design, but this year Japan came on particularly strong. Now, more than ever, it's about clean vibrant colors, stylized floral patterns and details like hand stitching, embroidery and oragami folds.

Right: Golden Timber dishes by Bodo Sperlein embrace the tree in its simplest form, but do so with shimmering color.Gilded tree rings in concentric circles are a stylish highlight on this salad plate, while the charger's tighter lines give it a faux bois effect.

Zenza’s hanging pendants are like those found in Casablanca, but with a twist. A hot trend at Maison & Objet, styles created from pierced materials are typical of Moroccan design.

This woven blanket, with its stylish combination of color and texture, by Zoeppritz won a Maison & Objet best-in-show award.

The ornate pattern on this pillow by Nur is another typically Moroccan trait, but the refined palette updates the look.

More on trends:

The designer for the brand Brigitte Forrestier, Jean Christophe Jalaber is well situated to analyze the evolution in consumer tastes : for him, the key words are quality and innovation

Didier Baumgarten / FNAEM: The "deco" spirit is all the rage and is pushing consumers to make much more varied and mixed choices.

Xavier Loup Landscape Architect, LOUP & Co, France: Today the yard is considered a true living space. LOUP & Co picked up on this trend very early on and works in several countries in Europe. Its suggestions for staged, vegetalized outdoor spaces have gained increasing success.

Patricia Urquiola Designer, Italy: A lover of byways and secret paths, Patricia Urquiola revisits woven outdoor furniture for B&B ITALIA. Armchairs and sofas, all XXL, can go from the patio to the living room.
