Crafts and natural wood in furniture are gaining popularity

Crafts and natural wood are gaining popularity, especially among young designers and that is great! Many beautifully crafted new designs could be seen both - at the IMM Cologne  and at Maison et Objet:

Itamar Burstein's  Pentagon table and stools entire structure relies on five identical elements - which are up-side-down 'U' shapes - fitting into one another. Each component is made from solid wood and are assembled through dry interlocking. The table has a plateau with a cut-out in its centre that governs the geometry of assemblage in the manner.

And something I like very much -  CuldeSac, a Spanish design agency, have created the Welding Wood furniture series. This is how they desceibe the process:
"We have brought back two different production techniques of traditional furniture making (lathe joined wood and steam bentwood) both came in a different period of time, and both are good examples of production technique innovations at that time.
We have combined them in a clear way to generate what we have defined as “Welding Wood.” Where two pieces connect, the section of the wood increases, and once this is done the wood is curved to achieve the structure and functionality.
The lathe work is no longer used just as an aesthetic provider, but it works more as a functionality provider, and that itself generates its own aesthetic.
The result is a sincere and transparent piece that possesses a formal, strong, robust, direct and very recognizable voice."
We have tried to provide new appreciation for antiquated production techniques. We have tried to create a skin in the object that allows us to establish an ancestral and close relationship."
I only wonder how strong the stool is, but no doubt the design is elegant and unique.

Wood trend in…everything

Once wood was the only material used for furniture, but 20th century preferred more modern materials. Now wood slowly comes back and in most unusual applications like Bathroom wood mozaics, Wooden bicycles, Wood Carpets That Can Roll Up,

wood iPod by Josh D, and Australian designer who had rebuilt an iPod casing and use an all natural material, which is nothing but wood...

wood trend is in everything !

My latest find is this Laser cut plywood lamp from Suck UK, design by Barend Hemmes (top). It is made out of laser cut wood which creates a waffle like glow. Can be hung from your ceiling or laid on its side.

The Wood Trend: Wooden Supercar!

As we have noticed earlier wood trend is on - wood has most unusual applications like Bathroom wood mozaics, Wooden bicycles, Wood Carpets That Can Roll Up, even wood iPod was created.

Now we have a wooden sports car! Wooden SuperCar ''Maniwa'' manufactured by Sada-Kenbi. According to the designboom post
"this japanese sports car manufactured by sada-kenbi is made
from wood. also known as maniwa, this special car was hand built by wood craftsmen and is actually legal to drive in japan. the car can accelerate up to 80km/h and is for sale at a bargain price of 44,000 USD. it also features a motorcycle-like handlebar steering system, gull wing doors and even has
a stereo. it seats one driver up front on a wooden seat and has a wood bench behind for up to two passengers. the designers even made a pedal-power version for kids."
You can look at its production here:

Дървената спортна кола ''Maniwa'' е произведена ръчно от by Sada-Kenbi. Те не се занимават с производство на коли, а с ръчно производство на изделия от дърво и целта им е била да покажат, че "няма нещо, което да не може да бъде направено от дърво". Колата е действаща и може да се види по улиците на Япония. Може да достигне до 80-90 км/час и да се поръча за 40 000$. Дизайнерите са направили и детска версия със задвижване с педали.

Creating homy atmosphere with wood

What is the material that has always helped us make our homes more cozy? Wood, of course - no matter what style one prefers, wood adds warmth. Especially old wood. It has its charm and adding vintage furniture can give the scheme a rustic edge:

Even in modern kitchens like this one it is the wood that makes it so cozy and inviting:

In this calming bedroom in neutral colour scheme it is the wood that makes it more balanced and adds warmth:

I like to use wood in the bedroom where the touch of wood is especially important - on the floor and for headboards and bedside cabinets, no matter if they are modern or more traditional, like this one of  Fortune Woods:

As you can see from the pictures above - wood is essential element of coziness, even without thick carpets or long curtains.

A lot of wood at Milan furniture fair 2011

The trend for using more and more wood in furniture and interior design continues this year at Milan Furniture Fare, too:

Reclaimed furniture at Spazio Rossana Orlandi by designer Piet Hein Eek: "I bought 600 to 1000 cubic metres of wood some time ago which needed to be used up. The simplest way to make a seat is by stacking wooden blocks to form a chair or sofa... "via
I suppose that Fan (left) is Tom Dioxon's answer to Urquiola's last year remake of the classical Windsor chair - Comeback (which is plastic). As he writes:
"Fan is a modern take on the classical Windsor chair. A British archetype converted to a contemporary silhouette, Fan makes an exclamation mark in any environment. The process involves spindles of wood carefully turned, thinned and steam bent to create the slatted silhouette. The wood is then stained in our new highlight colour, Indigo. Fan has a black leather seat pad."
But I like very much its natural wood version above, image from designapplause.com.

The Bouroullec brothers ‘Osso’ (engl.: ‘Bone’), a new solid wooden chair for the small, family-owned company Mattiazz. They say:
“We were particularly interested by the fact that all the equipment is powered by solar energy and that the wood is coming from the surrounding areas to be carefully selected without the use of any chemical treatments. They came back to the basics and this is precisely what piqued our interest and our fascination for the Mattiazzi family’s endeavor”

Reclaimed wood in interior design

As my readers already know, wood is one of may favourite materials for use in interior design. And not only because it helps for Creating homy atmosphere..., but also because wood is almost always unique - with its natural patterms or the way it ages. The changes that happen always create unique marks, especially when we use reclaimed wood, which is one of the popular modern trends.
