Milan Design Week 2010 Preview

Less than a month after the excitement of the year's first furniture shows in Paris and Cologne I am pleased to publish two of the first new products that will be presented at the coming in April Milan Design Week 2010!
Ceramica Globo presents a new quartet: Relais monolithic washbasin - a unique piece of modern design, washstand made from a single ceramic block. It can be considered a real piece of micro‐architecture for the bathroom, in which the material has been modelled to create a product with its own special personality. Characterised by contemporary shaping and its luminous surfaces, the washbasin has been designed for freestanding installation.

 And the second one is

"a renderings by japanese designer junya ishigami of 'lens table' for the italian company living divani.
ishigami developed a dining table (height 75 cm) and a coffee table (height 39 cm), both with an extraordinary optical effect.
the tables are made entirely of glossy transparent perspex."
presented by  designboom.

Stockholm Design Week - Preview

Stockholm Design Week starts tomorrow. Two new products that are going to be presented there and that both have interesting stories behind their conception :

Swell, by Stockholm's company Form Us With Love -
an armchair with interesting story, showing how designers have revived a production line of bean bags:

Visiting Voice in the summer of 2009, we were led on a tour of the facilities by Managing Director, Sonnie Byrling. Upon arrival at a production line of bean bags, he stopped. The facility, once churning out bags by the minute, now stood motionless. Trend and low quality copies had severely stunted production. The brief was concise - design a piece of furniture that would make the machines run again. We set about designing a new product for a new target group. One not clouded by childhood memories of what a beanbag was. The decision was made to make the product a lot more exclusive - more of an easy chair for the living room or hotel lobby, without losing the rationality of the production process.

And Embroidery Chairs series that aims to revive the old tradition of embroidery in a modern application. I would say although I admire his intent, that is not a new idea - we saw it already last year at Milan Design Week  where Patricia Urquiola showed her new Fergana sofa - a piece of furniture that I think still has not recieved its proper recognition.
