Design for children

With a new school year just around the corner, we need to get students and their rooms ready for the first day. If you have kids, you’re probably shopping for school supplies and taking a few days off in the next few weeks to prepare before they go back to school.
One of the most important pieces of furniture in students rooms is their desk. Flexibility as regards ergonomic needs is very important, particularly for kids writing tables. One great option: TEAM 7 offer natural wood furniture that grows with your children - the flexible Lanoo desk can be adjusted in height from 52 to 82 cm, either infinitely via a hydraulic mechanism or in preset increments.

But entertainment is also part of students lives - this Distressed Denim Children's /Teen Video Rocker Chair is also a very good idea for a teen's or child's room:

Unique and unusual home accessories

They are pleasure to look at and they create atmosphere in addition to their practical function and value.

I just saw this Communicator Balloon Fruit Bowl by Alessi- designer Marti Guixé has created this interactive fruit bowl so that people can communicate with each other through this decorative object. It allows for writing on three insertable message ballons. The bowl is stainless steel; the communication balloons are white PMMA.
Alessi, known as the Italian design factory, has manufactured household products since 1921, the stylish and fun items offered are the result of contemporary partnerships with some of the world's best designers of unique and modern home accessories. We are familiar with the most popular products, but even designers like me get surprised with new discoveries. Like this
Voile Spaghetti Measure
by LPWK and Paolo Gerosa which measures approximately one, two or five servings of pasta. It is part of the Objet Bijou collection and makes a great gift for spaghetti lovers young and old.

The Logs Trend - Another example

This is a fashion in interior and furniture design that was most clearly noticed at the beginning of 2010 at the Maison et Objet and Cologne Furniture Fair and one that I like very much, especially when wood logs are used because of inherent qualities rather than for being a trendy material or form.

I found yesterday this interesting example of the log trend - a lamp with the name The wise one | design by Ieva Kalēja from "mammalampa” . Their manifesto:

"bored by plastic, we yearn for living beauty"
And that is their description of the lamp:

"our wise lamp generates an aura of visceral energy and vitality around her. she will organically blend into a rural environment, as well as providing the essence of nature within city apartments."

"all of the lighting body’s components are inherently natural and refined right down to the finest details; each log has been selected for its individuality, thus preserving the individual character of each tree.

our wise lamps are available in two different inner colour versions – naturally white and spring green.

the collection consists of a ceiling lamp and floor lamp with asymmetrically crossed feet made from two complementary materials (brass and painted metal) which accent the spontaneous character of a felled tree."

This trend is closely connected with the Rough Luxe Design Idea - another trend that tries to re-connect us with the more natural way of life.

You can pamper your little ones with this Transportation Multi Bedding Collection - a new pattern which combines retro versions of familiar transportation icons like buses, yellow cabs, bicycles and even a Zeppelin and directional signs with a brightly colored, high-contrast palette to stimulate a little one's developing eyesight and imagination.

Clever and simple design solution

It is so good to see that libraries and bookcases are still in the mind of designers and furniture producers! And not only that - designers change successfully our notion about what they should be! I think that designers nowadays begin finally to get their roles as problem-solvers properly. I saw today Jonathan Olivares’s new Factor shelves, designed for Driade at metropolismag.com and was fascinated by this simple and clever solution of centuries old problem - with his design now we don't have to strain to reach the top shelf and bend over to see the titles near the floor. The wood units curve to put books within easy reach, while a ridge at the front and back of the shelves keeps them in place - great!
